City Approves Name Change to Subsection of Midway District

Rancho Point Loma Coming Soon

San Diego CA — April 1, 2025— A Point Loma winery owner has successfully petitioned the City of San Diego to rename a subsection within San Diego’s Midway District.

Effective May 1, 2025, the area will be officially designated Rancho Point Loma.

Keith Rolle, owner and winemaker at Gianni Buonomo Vintners, recently moved his urban winery from Ocean Beach to San Diego’s Midway area. “With all the excitement around the redevelopment plans here, I felt it deserved a new name. The name is consistent with the renewed hope and optimism for the area while also recognizing the area’s history.”

The specific designate is three square miles delineated by Kurtz Street to the south and Interstate 8 to the north. The eastern border is at Sherman Street and the western border is at Hicock Street.

City of San Diego’s Deputy Chief Nomenclator Officer Huyen Nguyen Nelson agreed that the refresh button needed to be hit regarding the name of the area. “Many associate the Midway District as a hotbed for vagrancy, open drug use and prostitution. But that is simply not the case. Thanks to the efforts of the SDPD, vagrancy and open drug use in the area has dropped by over 95 percent.”

Rolle’s winery is perched in the middle of the new Rancho Point Loma. He said it took about 6 months and over $45,000 to get the petition approved. “I liked the name Rancho Point Loma because in some ways the area is very similar to Rancho Santa Fe and Rancho Bernardo. Also, the new name brings its history around full circle.”

The area’s modern development can be traced back to early settlements in the mid- 1800s when it was primarily agricultural.  Then in the years prior to World War II workers flocked here from around the country for jobs in the booming defense industry. The federal government built the Frontier Housing Complex to help with the massive demand for housing.

In 1966 the Frontier Complex was razed, and the San Diego Sports Arena was completed.

Rolle continues, “We are so excited to bring in a full-functioning winery and tasting room to this vibrant new community. Gianni Buonomo Vintners is proud to be the first winery in the new Rancho Point Loma Winery District.”
